SORRY, WE’RE NOT HIRING ANY VISIONARIES TODAY
they’re told. When we look at the whole education system, it’s only recently that we are starting to reevaluate things.
Don’t get me wrong, some people thrive in it. I wasn’t somebody who suc- ceeded. To make it worse, I was a little less mature than my classmates. My mother was very fearful, and she kept us at home. She didn’t let us go out much because she thought that if we hurt ourselves or something happened to us, it would be a reflection of her as a mother. Socially, even intellectually, I was behind.
Athletics not much better. My hand and eye coordination could have been better, too. I was behind. I didn’t fit in with the smart kids, and I didn’t fit in with the athletic kids.
When you’re young and need someone to explain critical concepts to you, you can make a lot of wrong assumptions about yourself. You don’t have the ex- perience, exposure, logic or emotional stability to explain yourself to you in a way that makes sense about how and why things are the way they are.
A lot of times, you’re shamed. You feel like there’s something wrong with you.
Don’t daydream so much. Pay attention. Why aren’t you getting this? What’s wrong with you? People want to shut it down rather than show you you have a gift or something special. But rather than doing this, seeing how we can cul- tivate this makes more sense.
What happens to people who get pigeonholed into practical positions? They get stifled. They shut down that part of their life because they’ve been shamed for it or not experienced much success. I don’t want to sound overly dramatic, but I believe a part of you dies when you do that.
I’ve always looked at things differently from, you know, the opposite end. By looking at it differently, you can sometimes see the failings or shortcomings. You see things that won’t work. You can imagine the worst-case scenarios for some things. Creativity is a lot more than just in the artistic sense. It’s devel- oping other ways to look at things.
