SORRY, WE’RE NOT HIRING ANY VISIONARIES TODAY
She trusted me enough and liked my analysis of the idea to make a recom- mendation. They would take my ideas and put them on trial to see what would happen.
Many people have managers who want things done a certain way within spe- cific parameters. They’re scared of what the effect is. I never implemented anything risky that would put a patient’s life at risk or that you could only cor- rect slowly.
At the age of 24, I got married. At that time, I wanted to improve myself. So, I decided to go into accounting. The math was pretty easy. I went to community college. At the same time I was attending night school, I found myself getting involved in the trade union at the hospital. I was the treasurer, and it was a practical experience taking care of the books. I did the banking for them.
It was easy doing the financial stuff for the union. But the more I was there, the more I was drawn into people’s problems. These problems included things like friction between coworkers. Over time, I moved from the world of accounting and bookkeeping to more labour relations issues. I started reading collective agreements and understood them. I could advise people having problems at work , educate them of their rights and defend those rights if need be. I became of value to people and made their lives at work a little better.
I decided to take another course at the community college. This time, I studied labour relations and human resource management. This gave me a perspec- tive from both sides — employees and management.
I received honours in all the courses I took. Before this, I had spent ten years thinking I was stupid. Then I realized I’m good at something. Around the time I was getting all this education, I was introduced to personal development. This is another form of education. In truth, many things were valuable but became repetitive after a while. Some things could have been more helpful. But I’ve always dealt with personal development by taking what works for me, what resonates with me and discarding the rest.
