CHAPTER 6
You see, everywhere I’ve worked, I’ve made things more efficient. I’m often incredu- lous when I meet people who are doing things I know are inefficient, but I’ve learned to accept them, just as they accept me with all my faults.
So, given my propensity for efficiency, it doesn’t make sense for me to attend dozens of networking meetings (which I hate doing), of which only a fraction would lead to one-on-one meetings (which I hate doing), and then only a fraction of those could lead to sales, and the ones that lead to sales, I’d have to chase them for the money (which I hate doing the most).
It makes far more sense to me to have a job where I only have to sell myself once during the interview — I don’t have to keep selling myself and reselling myself day after day, week after week. Having a job is the most efficient use of my time and is far less mentally draining.
While the potential pay of a part-time job is lower, it’s far less mentally draining and it fills my days doing the things I love — working with technology, helping companies become more efficient and working in a wide variety of areas. So while a part-time job may have a financial cost, running a company has a mental cost.
So what type of work fits this? Well, it must involve technology, it has to involve doing a wide variety of tasks that help companies run efficiently, and it has to be remote and part-time. The obvious match is a part-time Virtual Assistant (VA) which I’ve done before, which I’m doing now and which I can continue to do. I know that this will be the best use of my time and more importantly, my mental energy, and it’s the kind of work I can do for years. How do I know this?
Because I do this for now for my own personal benefit. I have hundreds of files that contain various information and I love reviewing them and organizing them. They say if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. I’m amazed that companies will pay me to do what I love doing — that’s how I know it’s right for me.
Now, while it’s possible that I would have reached this conclusion without doing the work on the book with you, I think that working on this chapter, along with reading some excellent books about retirement, have solidified my choice.
