mount and it creates a situation where people aren’t living their true authentic self. They are out of alignment.
What are your thoughts on assessments?
Too many people don’t know themselves enough or at all, or they’re living up to the expectations of other people, which a lot of us have. This stems from childhood and the question, “Are my parents proud of me?” But then it hits in places like elementary school. We strive to get the right marks. Many have a deep internal core of pleasing other people before themselves.
We’re deathly afraid of discovering more about ourselves and not meeting our expectations. Some people have a massive fear of failure. There can be a dis- connect if they take an assessment test that doesn’t align with a grandiose or imaginative vision of themselves. Where they are in reality vs where they’d like to be can be extremely difficult to absorb. This may account for why people don’t wish to know the truth.
How did your career progress at the staffing agency?
I was asked to spearhead the trade show activations that we were doing. I was offered the opportunity to get creative with all aspects of our presence at events. This included how the booth looked, how we brought people in, and which booth staff were there. I also worked on what the goals were (i.e. col- lecting resumes or more about networking)
I wound up at a few other staffing agencies, eventually leading to me working with the Human Resources Professional Association (HRPA). Over the years, I attended their annual conference and trade show. It had over 5,000 attendees and 300 exhibitors. It is a vast show, and its wow factor was why I became in- terested in being a part of the HRPA. I was asked to run their annual event, which was hugely humbling and exciting. It was heart-opening to be in align- ment in the place I never thought I’d get to.
Currently, you do event planning, and I sense that things are aligned career-wise.
