SORRY, WE’RE NOT HIRING ANY VISIONARIES TODAY
I decided to go to a headhunting firm. My goal was for them to place me in as many different offices and other industries as possible. This was so that I could get a grasp of short-term contracts. I wanted to know how to level up my finances quickly. I wanted to make my time count.
So, what happened next?
I told them my plan, and they said, “Well, how about you come work here? You can be here as the receptionist and administration and help us with our sales.” Two weeks after I joined, the company promoted me to HR consultant. Immediately, I was thrown into the ring of interviewing candidates, under- standing and grasping who they are, what they’re looking for, where their skills are, and where their passions lie. I worked within the staffing firm for three and a half years.
What did they see in you that allowed them to move you up so quickly and put you in a responsible position?
There was a senior person (at the time, she was the vice president) at the com- pany who is now the president. She told me that what she saw in me was a re- flection of herself. I could read people well. I could understand the intricacies of what they were saying between the lines. I found out if they were speaking their truth and being honest with themselves and our company.
This is critical.
We would look bad by putting the wrong person into a position and having to swap them out a week or two later. I had this ability to access at a high level. This VP could see that right off the bat, I was able to respond to people walking into the office and respond to people that we were calling for com- panies. I could switch my tone and timing. How I deal with people shifts based on the person I’m dealing with because I’m just connecting with some- one heart-to-heart.
You have to kind of align passionately with that. Sometimes, it’s difficult be- cause they might be a cold person who doesn’t want to shake hands or doesn’t like answering particular questions. And that’s okay. Each person is on their journey. It’s all about meeting people where they are.
