CHAPTER 14
Melissa – Right Place, Right Time
As with many people in this book, I met Melissa by pure chance. We were both at an event and business cards were exchanged. I helped her with an event she was putting together and then, through another stroke of serendipity, I found out Me- lissa had a background in Human Resources.
What was your first job?
During college, I worked in the restaurant business. The money was in- credible. I was a waitress in a sports bar throughout college. I did it for six years; most weeks, I worked every day. You’re just a vampire living a vampire life. You’re up all night long; you’re sleeping all day. The money’s good when you’re in your early 20s, but do you want to be doing that for the rest of your life?
What drew you to work in human resources?
Initially, I was drawn to human resources because it was precisely the
point where I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I came out of college with a general arts degree. I have also taken some science and business administra- tion courses.
The truth is that I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I had these little pieces of paper but no real, you know, set job opportunities in place. So,
