I thought about putting a quote on failure to start this chapter. You know, some- thing inspiring or witty. But the truth is, it takes away from the power of the words you are about to read.

My father suffered from throat cancer for several years. It was indeed a hor- rible disease. I distinctly recall hearing him crying in pain in the bedroom. Unfortunately, my father became very sick and tragically passed away at the age of 41. I was only eight years old at the time.
The funeral of my father remains my earliest childhood memory. This all oc- curred when my brother Ralph was 16 and working in the family business. Of
