Robyn – Acting When Opportunity Knocks
I found Robyn, who is based in Australia, through a Facebook Group of Kolbe QuickStarts. We share almost the same score and oddly enough, a similar career path (sort of!).
I started my professional life as a primary school teacher and resigned from the Victorian Education Department when my children were just before school age. I wanted to be home with them, primarily because of what I knew from teaching and the benefits of having a parent at home.
I didn’t go back to work full-time for 17 years. I took on a whole lot of part- time roles.
I returned to university with an undergraduate degree in Library and Informa- tion Management. I also followed that up with a diploma in Student Welfare because I thought I would return to teaching when my youngest child began his secondary education. I couldn’t even get an interview. It was a shock to find I’d done all this extra training and all this experience, and none of it was in any way valued.
Randomly, I saw an advertisement in the paper for graduates of other disci- plines who were looking for work, with an IT company looking to train system testers for Y2K. Against all the odds — there were about 540 applicants, and
