SORRY, WE’RE NOT HIRING ANY VISIONARIES TODAY
There is a well-documented principle of goal setting that says that you only share your goals with supportive people who can help in the delivery of the goals. Goals should only be revealed to a limited number of people.
MICHAEL: It not only resonates, it was my entire modus operandi. I knew that first, they were going to ignore me, as Gandhi says. I knew they were going to laugh at me. Then I figured they’d fight me, but at the end of the day, I knew I’d win.
I used to get into pretty intense moments down in California at the trade shows. They would say: “You’re a freakin’ kook, you’re an idiot.” The shit that rained down on me for over a decade was a sight to behold!
But as they say, living well was the best revenge. I knew that I was onto some- thing, and I knew that other people would eventually get it. There are people who think I’m an idiot and some who think I’m a legend. Frankly, I’m neither — I’m just somebody who took a stance, put myself out there, and held firm to my principles.
What’s funny is, you have to have a certain mentality to be able to handle that. This leads nicely into our next segment, because any passionate why can over- come any how. I knew in my heart that skateboarding was too good to be kept just as a one-dimensional myopic piece. It needed to be wide open.
A social style issue in part.
So I’ve now expanded that thought, and I’m bringing something new. I’ve got another 20 years left in me to work on that.
I know the landscape of death and end-of-life issues needs to change. Some people think I’m crazy for doing these free memory seminars. But I know in my heart that there are people that are going to come up to me and say: “You know what? Five years ago, I mostly ignored you at that grandparents’ event at the school. But my grandfather filled out your booklet, and thank God we have that booklet because he died last year.” My intention is not to rub it in
