CHAPTER 11
Rick — The Janus of Taking Action
Those who are both visionary and entrepreneurial see the world a little differently than most. They have two distinct skills — they can see what others can’t and they are willing to take action in a methodical way. It’s an incredible combination and produces some extraordinary things.
I am from a relatively small town in British Columbia. My entrepreneurial spi- rit has a lot to do with my dad. He was a meat salesman. When I was younger, I’d ride with him. I could see how he changed when he went to visit a cus- tomer.
For example, when he went to the Super Value Safeway, I saw how he changed and could sell with such a big smile. I learned much of my sales ability and negotiating skills then. I was only eight years old. That’s how I turned into such a crazy businessman. For example, I sold my own brother my dresser. He thought he got a good deal until our parents found out!
I had my first enterprise with my friends when I was around 12 years old. I had a candle business where I hired the local kids to make and sell them. This was how I could afford a colour TV before my parents. I figured out a way of manufacturing candles instead of using molds. I would create the most beautiful candle sculptures in about 5 minutes.
