SORRY, WE’RE NOT HIRING ANY VISIONARIES TODAY
writing process documents. In fact, everywhere I worked, I created detailed operating procedures and guides, which all involved technical writing. But this was a company that made fishing gear, so I could only get so excited about it, having never fished.
I took that job as far as I could, and then it started to become too complex and tedious for me.
“Tedious” suggests that there were no new facts to gather and contextual- ize. Was the issue really complex, or was it a poorly described process? Often complexity is not the issue but a poorly explained process. This is where the value of innovation can benefit because innovation requires no explanation for it to be true.
I had a fairly good manager who taught me a great deal, but he had developed all these crazy, intricate processes that were often hard for me to replicate and would sometimes pressure me to do more. I was also tired of commuting down to the office twice a week because I knew I could do all the work from home.
So I thought, I have savings. I’ve learned a lot being in IT for over 30 years. Why don’t I become an independent consultant? So in September of 2023, I launched my business, and the initial focus has been to help people move to customer relationship management systems. But having tried this for several months, I’m not really sure this is what I want to do. I have one client who I do a little bit of writing for and another, bigger one where I’m doing CRM work but it will take a few months to know if this bigger client will be steady work. If I’m honest, if someone offered me an admin assistant 1-year contract at a non-profit, I would take it immediately because it would be stable work with stable pay, and I wouldn’t have to chase clients.
A better understanding of the Action Cycle could have extended the life of some of these roles.
MICHAEL: What would you say you’re most proud of in the last 30+ years of work?
